Pride is a recurring character in the Fullmetal Alchemist anime and manga series by Hiromu Arakawa.

Character Overview[]

Pride is the first "son" of the enigma that calls himself Father, making him the oldest living Homunculus. The child known as Selim Bradley, the son of Fuhrer Bradley is merely a "host", a shell of the homunculus in disguise. Though he pretends to be an innocent child to the public, in the battlefield he is described by Greed himself as more of a monster than the other Homunculus, making him quite ruthless.

Appearance[]

As Selim Bradley, Pride appears as a young boy with black hair and black eyes. His apparel consists of a long sleeved white shirt under a black button vest and gray shorts. As the Homunculus, his eyes become a glaring purple. His true form is that of an amorphous mass of shadow brimming with multiple red eyes and teeth. Due to the nature of his shape, he is never depicted in full three-dimensional shapes, but in flat textures that "peel" out of flat surfaces when rising from the ground.

Personality[]

As Selim, he appears to be an innocent young boy, proud of his "father", King Bradley, aspiring to become like him one day and is quite polite to others. As Pride, he is an almost unfeeling monster, his malevolence even greater than the other Homunculus after him and revels in the thrill of battle.

Special Abilities[]

Pride possesses the basic slime abilities of liquefying, shapeshifting and weapon molding. Pride is easily the most deadly of the Homunculus, often forming impaling, spiky constructs which he uses to pierce his enemies. He is also able to gain the abilities of fellow Homunculus by devouring them, as he did with Gluttony. Despite his vast power, Pride's shadowy form is limited to the current area of his human "shell" and he is unable to pass the boundary of the circular transmutation circle surrounding Amestris. Additionally, if there is no light to cast a shadow upon, his shadowy form will disintegrate, making him completely vulnerable to attack.

Synopsis[]

Trivia[]

  • Pride earlier appeared in the 2003 adaptation of the manga, but due to complications, the anime ran ahead of the manga, telling a different story altogether. As a result, Pride became that series's Wrath character while Selim remained a completely human being.
